Nice job little brother.
There's some great history here. It's a pleasure to read and learn about this part of the fighting in WWII. The pictures are great too. I am interested in learning as much as I can about the 340th since my father, Quentin C. Kaiser, served in the 489th squadron as a radio-gunner stationed in Corsica. Good job! to the creators of this site. Best regards, Don Kaiser
My father, Al Donovan, was a radio operator/tail gunner with the 340th from late 1944 until April 1945 during which time he flew on 67 missions. I never expected to find a site dedicated to his Bomb Group -- thanks for bringing it all together. I particularly appreciated the information on the flak batteries defending the Brenner Pass -- we still have a piece of flak that burst into Dad's position that he retrieved as a souvenir. His crew as he left for Corsica included Beryl Burdette, pilot, Otis Outlaw, co-pilot, Zeke Zukaukis, navigator/bombadier and John Styga, top turret/engineer. I'd enjoy hearing from them, their relatives or anyone who may have known my Dad who passed away in 1989.
Thanks,
Kevin Donovan
Nice web page! Many thanks to the people who made the pictures and information possible over the internet.
I came across your great website while searching for information on Americans who enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.
In the November 2000 issue of AIR CLASSICS magazine is an article I wrote entitled, YANKS IN THE RCAF. The article tells the story of the 8000 brave young Americans like your father and his friend,Bill Livesey, that joined the RCAF. Over 800 Americans lost their lives while serving in the RCAF.

Thank you for the look back in time. My father, Andrew Lucas, served with the 57th. I have his bomber patches and many photos, most of which haven't been seen outside the family. Looking for info about my Grandfathers Brother who went down over the Meditereanian. First Lieutenant, John E. Kraybill U.S. Army Air Forces O-726259 2nd Anti-Submarine Squadron Entered the Service from: California Died: September 4, 1943 Buried at: Plot B Row 2 Grave 20 North Africa American Cemetery Carthage, Tunisia Awards: Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart Can anyone help find out the mission this happened on? Or any info from his friends.
It's good to see a historical site about the wartime record of the 57th BW, and the 340th BG in particular. My father, Charles H. Wagamon, was a bombardier with the 340th Bomb Group, 486th Bomb Squadron, flying 20 combat missions, mostly against the Brenner Pass (I think), from late '44 thru May '45. Most of the time he flew in B-25J tail number "6Q", named "Noah's Ark", although I think he flew in other planes from time to time. His pilot's name, I believe, was Paul E. Noah, hence the plane's name. My dad's been looking for a 340th Bomb Group site for some time, so I'll let him know about this one. (He's currently a County Judge, in Walker Co., Texas.) Question: Since there seems to be a dearth of books and written info on the air war in Italy, why has no one written a full-blown history of the 340th, from '42 to '45 to fill this gap in history? Thanks for the info on the Brenner pass Flak! I'm sure my dad remembers it all too well. I'll pass this website along to him. --Ed Wagamon, Barboursville, Virginia

My father was in the 488th. Thanks for posting this material. I've seen many of the pictures in the memory book of the 488th that my Dad has. We owe an incredible debt to that generation!
Well, after switching from a Mac to a non-Apple computer, I've finally managed to get some photos scanned that my father, Andrew Lucas took when he was with the 488th Bombardment Squadron. I know little of his time there except what I've gleaned from this marvelous site. Perhaps some may recognize themselves or others in the pix. If anyone knew my dad, I'd like to hear from them. So how do I get the photos onto the site? I've got eleven scanned and more in a box.
I am the son of Col. William C. Mills, commander of 340th. Bomb Group, originally.
Very interesting site. My uncle is Warren Chandler, pilot of "Bourbon Baby" in the 57th Bomb Wing, 321st Bomb Group, 446th Squadron based on Corsica. He flew 66 combat missions from August 1944 to April 1945. He is doing well and still lives in Iowa.
Just cruising around the net looking at Mach's and seen yours. NICE!! I would like to add it to my gallery also, drop me a line when you get a chance. George...
Hi,
I was in the squadron (66th Fighter Squadron) that Bill Livesey was in from 1955-1957 when it was once again deactivated. Also writing a book about one of Bill's CO's in the 66th (Bill Benedict Dec 1943-Jun 44)
I like your site, but there is a problem when its printed out. The pictures overlap the text. Common problem with some sites.
Benedict got his wings July 23, 1941 Yorkton, Sak. Transrered over to 57th Fighter Group in North Africa in December of 1942.
There were 3 others from the RCAF in the 66th. Bill Livesey, Bud Schuren and Charlie Leaf.

My father, Private Ova W. Ratliff, was killed in WW II on Nov. 14th, 1944, at Hurtgen Forest, Germany. He was only in the Army for 8 months, from his induction to his wartime death. During that time he wrote 84 letters home and I have complied them into a book, "I Can Hear The Guns Now". I let him tell the story. Please look at the book's website: WWW.ICANHEARTHEGUNSNOW.COM for more information about him, and how to order the book. $2.00 from the sale of each book will be donated to The National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Respectfully yours, Thomas G. Ratliff

Looking forward Virgina Beach in September 2001 !
Looking for info. regarding my father, Paul G. Forcey, who served as a pilote for the RCAF (don't know what division/squadron) in or around 1941. Thank you.
Something had me thinking of the Brenner Pass today, link that it is between the Romance and Germanic worlds. From the sounds of it, this was one of the layers indicated as forming the "tough old gut", in the advance on the Reich between 1943 - 1945.
As Pilot of aB25, I managed to complete 57 missions most of them in the Brenner Pass. Others in Austria and Yugoslavia. Also the big coast artillery guns at La Specia.
Thanks for providing the above info. Hank Galny.

Unfortunately, he gave most, if not all his pictures from during the service away. If anyone can tell me anything about Dad or has a picture or two, I'd love to hear from you! So would Dad, I'm sure. I want our next generation to know more about their grandfather. Thanks for any help you can provide

My Dad was James A. Shear, a weather officer with the 340th. I have a number of photos from the north Africa and Italy efforts. I'll try to get them scanned and make them available to those who are interested.

Seeking information on a B29 crash which occurred during a training exercise on December 14, 1943. The aircraft crashed into a mountain. My great-uncle, Joseph Diaz, was among the crew. Unfortunately I do not know where the crash occurred, or what group my uncle belonged to.
Subj: 12th Airforce 340th med bomb group Hello Im looking for info on a relative that was in the army airforce WWII. From the letters sent home I have the 340th as the group and have found that associated with the 12th Airforce. I have discharge papers that show Sicilian, Naples-Foggia, and Air Offensive Europe. His name is Nathan Crane Aerial Gunner. There is a list of decorations and citations. I have a name of a crew member. and first names of others. I assume by the campaigns Nate flew on a B-25 although I was always told He was on a B-17. Can you help? wher is a good place to reserarch? Can I find crew members? Nate passed away in 1972. My mother who is 66 now was very fond of Nate. I would like to find out more about his service to our country for my mother. thanks

Looking for people who served with the 489th Bomb Squadron from April '44 to May '44. In particular, I'm looking for pictures (or personal accounts) of a B-25D that was there for this time period only. The serial number is 43-3634, and had the tail code "9C". If you remember this plane please contact me. Thanks! Paul Draper B-25D ser# 43-3634 Restoration Crew
