My Father Joseph Karpiak served in the 488th or 489th Bombardment Squadron I'm not sure. Many years ago his basement got flooded and his Campiagn book (like the one shown at this site) was ruined I was wondering if there is anyway that I could get this book replaced for him. Also does the 57th Bomb wing still hold reunions? Thanks, Steve Karpiak
Was navigator with 722nd Sqdn., 450th Group(B-24s) - the Cottontails. Shot down on dec. 29 on mission to Brenner, Thanks for the account of you guys in the mediums. Too often, as you said, there were battles within battles and until our attention is called to one of those, we forget that our battles were not the other guys'. Again, thanks for the reminder./
Hello, My boyfriend owns two 1970 mustangs. A mach 1 and a convertible. I am trying to find a matchbox car of either one of his cars. Just some minor/major machanical repairs and onto a paint job.

Thanks to those who have put this site togather.I'm the son of J.M."Cotton" Wiginton. He was a pilot with the 321st.BG/447th Squadron.Since he spoke very little of his time in the Air Corp.I have little to go on as far as his responsibilitys to the Bomb Group. It wasn't until I recently aquired a copy of"Headlines 321st Bomb Group"dtd 15 March 1943-15 March 1945.that I found out he was listed in"Operations"in the section entitled-Headquarters-as well as the-447th Squadron-.I know he was a pilot but the "operations" has me a little confused. If anyone can tell me more it would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone knows they had a relative in the 321stBG but want to find out which Sq.I can help. This book lists the Officers and Enlisted Men of the 445th/446th/447th and the 448th Squadrons. It dosn't give rank, but does give their position,(like Pilot or Bombardier etc).I also have a few pictures that I would be glad to share. One of my father&crew in front of their B-25, "REDDIE TEDDIE".Another of a crew in front of the "M MR".And the"DESERT LIL'".If anyone out there flew with or knew my father,I would enjoy hearing from you. Steve Wiginton Austin,Texas
I served with the 321st--445th squadron in Africa and Italy
hey i like your site and i'm a big fun of mustangs and i want to by one.
My dad, W.T. Blume, flew with the 57th in 1944-45, first as a bombardier and later as a combat cameraman in the 9th Combat Camera Unit. I'm organizing some of his papers & photographs and came across your site which helped put a lot of things in perspective. I have some excellent, professional-quality photos he took of planes, people, nose art, etc. Perhaps I can share some of these with you in the future.
Looking for information on what group my Grandfather, CHARLES C. PAYNE was with. Not sure if the 57thBW is where I should be looking either. Taking a shot with the 321st due to the fact my Grandfathers name was on the Roster of Replacements for the 448th.448th Sqd falls under 57thBW, so here I am. He was listed on that roster as CPL Charles C Payne. A service new - newspaper clipping from 1944 stated he was with "a" 12thAF B25 bombardment group, and that he'd been with the same group overseas that past 24 months. That they'd taken part in the Tunisian, Sicilian, and Italian campaigns. Also mentioned he had just received his Motor Vehicle Drivers Badge. PLEASE, PLEASE click the URL above and take a look at my Grandfathers page. If you recognize him or can help in anyway feel free to contact me. Thanks for reading this! Proud Granddaughter of a WWII Vet.
An interesting site. My brother was a B-24 bombardier in the 93rd Bomb Group, 330th Squadron. He was KIA on 6 March 1944 when his plane was hit by flak over Berlin. There were three survivors of an eleven man crew. I was interested in how the flak guns were deployed and how they found the right altitudes and also how the shells detonated at the right altitude. God bless all those who were involved, both living and dead, who made our freedom possible. May they never be forgotten!!!!
I also have a 1970 mach 1, 3 speed, standard on the floor, with a hurst shifter, huge cam, scoop, the everything. i must say, we have some gems. god bless.
MY FATHER SERVED AS A BOMB-LOADER WITH THE 486TH SQUADRON UNTIL HE WAS TRANSFERRED TO A MILITARY HOSPITAL ON MALTA IN DEC. 1943 BECAUSE OF MALARIA. His name was Larry Levin, and I wonder if any of his former comrads remember him.
I really enjoyed visiting this site. My father, Hymie Setzer, was in the 340th. He did mostly clerking and driving work, but was tapped to fill out crews as a tail gunner on some missions. It would be great to hear from some one who might remember him.
I want to thank the people who put this web site together because it is a great history to have. I was in the 488th bomb squadron and later in group headquarters as assistant group operations officer.
Have been looking for info on the 340th bomb group. My dad flew as a tailgunner with this group from May 1943 to Aug or Sept. 1944. Flew North Africa and Italy. was with the group when they got the first Presidential citation. I have lots of pictures patches etc. Really interested in the history of the group and the crews themselves. He flew 51 missions. His name was Ralph Holman
I am the son-in-law of Capt. Glenn S. Crisp of the 321st B/G, 446th Bomb Squad who passed away June 27, 2002 at the age of 80. He left many photographs and documents of his tour of duty (August 1944-May 1945), and I am trying to piece together as much information as I can to get a better understanding of his experiences. I appreciate the information provided on this and related websites, and hope that I, too, can contribute information from the archives of Capt. Crisp that will help other descendants of the Men of the 57th learn about and appreciate what their fathers and grandfathers did for their country.
I'm looking for patches for the 723rd Bomber Squadron and the 450th BOmber Group (H). If anybody has one or knows where to buy them please let me know.
you restored that car good i am only 15 and i love that car i want it
We have recently completed a website honouring the memory of Flight Sergeant Harry Hansell RCAF, an air gunner who died in a Halifax bomber over Germany in 1943. His very personal story was in many ways typical of hundreds of Canadian boys, yet his father the Honorable Ernest G. Hansell M.P. was able to determine many details of his war service that often were never known by families who lost sons or husbands under similar circumstances. HARRY'S STORY can be read at http://www.my.intergate.ca/bhansell/
We have just purchased a 1970 Ford Mustang Mach ! - just checking out the different web sites - you have a beautiful car! Basically, we stole this car from someone who had it sitting in the grove - and it still runs. It has a 351 small block, 3 speed...any ideas would be of great!
Thank you for creating this site. My father was Jim Gribbin of the 321st bombardment group, 446th squadron. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers him. Mary Gribbin, meg56@earthlink.net
My dad, Guy Wood ("Woody"), was a fighter pilot with the rank of Flying Officer in the 417 in N. Africa and later in Sciliy from 1942 on. He was an American from Ann Arbor, Michigan who jointed the RCAF in 1941 in Canada where he got his flight training. He was then transferred to England and then on to North Africa. When I was young, I heard many stories about his exploits in the desert flying Spitfires, Hurricanes, etc. At this point the only name I remember him talking about was a friend named Gibby Gibson. We have a few photos of him and others in the desert by their planes, relaxing in tents, etc. I wish now I had recorded his memories, so it is great to see what you have done with this website. Thanks!
I was with 487th Sqn. on Corsica from May 1944 until Jan. 1945. Anyone that remembers me , please contact me. I would like to hear from any of my crew members.
My father was in the 487th (Tech Sgt.,radioman and tail gunner; Corsica '43'44). I am sorry to say he passed away July 5th, 2001. He liked to talk about his time in the service. I have several bombing run, airstrip, and buddy photos along with flight books, notes, etc. I know he was intending to get involved with surviving members, but pancreatic cancer took him out. He will always be missed and remembered.

I joined the RCAF in July 1941 in Toronto as an Air Crew Cadet. I was first stationed at St Hubert, Montreal and went to initial training school in Victoriaville, Quebec. I then went on to 21EFTS in Chatham, New Brunswick. From there I went to No, 9 SFTS Summerside, Prince Edward Island in November 1941. In November 1942 I got my Wings. I was at No 1 Wireless School, St Hubert, Montreal as a Staff Pilot and went on to No 2 SFTS Uplands, Ontario on a refresher course. In January 1943 I went overseas and spent two months in Bournemouth. From there I went to No 17 Advanced Flying Unit, Wrexham, North Wales. In July I went to No 57 OTU Eshott, Morpeth where I was taught to fly Spitfires. In October 1943 I joined the RAFs 41 Squadron at Tangmere, Sussex. The Squadron was stationed at different placed around the UK. In April 1944 I was stationed at Bolt Head, Devon prior to the invasion of Europe. Whilst at Lympe, Eastbourne in July 1944 we patrolled for Doodlebugs (V1s). In August 1944 the RCAF asked for volunteers so Jack Malone and I volunteered and left for Italy in mid August. I was with 417 Squadron from August 1944 to March 1945 based in Loreto, Italy. When I joined we were sent to Belaria, North of Rimini. Whilst with 417 Squadron I made friends with Tommy Wilson (Calgary), Jack Wilson (Windsor) and Alan Marshall (Peterborough). Tommy Wilson was decorated with the DFC. Dave Goldberg was the Squadron Commander. I also met Bob Wagner, an American, who was shot down off the Channel Islands in June 1944. He survived and we met again after the war in Eastbourne. Hugh Murray was shot down in December 1944 over Italy survived and we met again after the war in Bournemouth. I would love to hear from anybody who remembers me.
An elderly friend of mine (Joe Byrd)was shot down in the 488th BS 8V that is pictured on your http://members.tripod.com/jkoppie/340.htm He was shot down on March 30th, 1945 over the Brenner Pass. He was the bombardier/navigator and was a POW for a couple of months. I was surprised in talking with Joe to find out that they did not use set crews and were with different crews on each mission. I am starting to build him a model of his plane (the 8V that he was shot down in) and trying my best to make it as accurate as possible. Thanks for your web site. Chuck

He has pictures, a diary of his sea voyage from US to Italy, and a collection of bomb tags for each mission with date, target informaton and resistance experienced, items that I am sure have some historical significance. My question is to how best to make this information available to others and any recommendations your organization might have as to how to procede from here. My father Stefano was an Italian partisan (Nino was his battle name) in the Piedmont-Piemonte region just south of Turin-Torino. In late Sept/early Oct 1944 the anticraft artillery shot a bomber returning from a mission over Turin. The plane stationed in Corsica. My father and his group rescued 5 crewmembers, hid them for several days and arranged their escape to a small airfield in Vesima/Cortemiglia. From there the crewmembers flew back to Corsica with a smaller plane. Later on the Allies organized a launch of supplies recognizable by the my father and his partisan group by the agreed password “Nino il vento e’ spento, Nino e’ cassata la pioggia” (Nino the wind calmed down, Nino the rain stopped). I would greatly appreciate any information or redirection to any information source.

Just wondered whether you recall crossing paths with a friend of mine,GEORGE S. MAXWELL? He went up from Washingon DC to Canada where he spent just about a year training to fly as fighter pilot with the RCAF. Got a commision and his wings and was shipped out to the UK where he flew with Squadron 71 in the EAGLE SQUADRON. Later he was transferred to the the North African front, I think CAIRO? I don't know the details but he eventually was commissioned in the ARMY AIR FORCE. I talked with him just yesterday(28 MAY 2003. Since retiring from the USAF(Bird, I believe)he has been living very close to ANDREWS AF BASE. Doesn't have a computer. His phone no. however is 1=301-449-6025. Healthwise he seems to be in pretty good shape. Still ramrod upright and lean and trim. Not bad for a old geezer of around 86 now. I'll be giving him you name and telling about my signing your GUESTBOOK. Cheers, Grubo, 29 May 2003

Also included is a list of others who received citations. These are people from the 12th Air Force. People like John C. Edwards, 1st LT; Ansgar E. Clausen, Robert G. Hess, Charles A. McKinney who were all awarded the silver star. The distinquished flying cross awards to James R. Farris of Saratoga, TX, Louis Mastriana of Schenectady,NY and many many more. My father, Hugh Charles Smith, as a 1st Lt. served with the 340th Bombardment Group, 488th Bomb Squadron from April 1943 through July 1944. I in my free time devote myself to the study of the passage of the second world war in my area (1943-1945). Besides I look for information on the aerial allied bombardments of the bridges on the Metauro river also and on the Cesano river, these rivers are near to my country. I thank all those that they will help me in these searches for don't forget and don't make forget to the young people of today those dramatic years of our history. Sincerely, Edi Eusebi
